Much attention has been given recently to the growing threat of climate change. Jane Mellett, a regular contributor to Reality, took part in a remarkable Climate Pilgrimage that began on the Feast of St Francis, 5 October last. She joined 1,500 pilgrims on a 1,500-kilometer walk from the Vatican to Katowice in Poland where a UN climate conference was due to begin in December. She chronicles the journey in her article, “The Climate Pilgrimage.” In her series, “God’s Surprises,” Susan Gately describes the work of “Pure in Heart,” an Irish-founded movement of young adults, who through prayer and friendship, try to learn, live and share the truth, beauty and meaning of human sexuality. While very much running against the grain of contemporary Ireland, the members of “Pure in Heart” claim “We look at sex in a whole new way. We see the dignity of the human person, our own self-worth and respect.” They spread the message by retreats in schools and in parishes. Some of them returned to faith after a period of darkness and disillusionment and what keeps them going is their hope for the future. As one young man said, “You’ve got to keep an eye on the goal – what kind of life you want. I want to be a good father, a good husband, to be faithful to my wife and faith – I keep my eye on the bigger picture.” Veronica O’Brien, a native of Middleton Co Cork, was a pioneer in the expansion of the Legion of Mary, but she entered the history books as a royal matchmaker who brought together two deeply committed Catholics, King Beaudoin of the Belgians and his Spanish-born Queen Fabiola. All the usual features are there of course, including this piece of practical advice by the writer Saki (HH Munro): “In baiting a mousetrap with cheese, always leave room for the mouse.”
