The June Reality is now available. In most Redemptorist Churches, June is “Novena Month” and time for the annual solemn novena. Whatever it is, or why ever it is, the Novena has an extraordinary attraction for people. Professor Terence Kennedy looks at how devotion to the Mother of Perpetual Help has spread so rapidly in Asia, touching the lives not just of Catholics but even of Moslems and people of other faiths. His article is illustrated by some Madonna and Child pictures drawn from the Islamic art of Persia and the Moghul Empire. One outstanding example is to be found in the novena in Singapore, and the editor sketches the attraction of a devotion that has given its name to a subway stop, a shopping centre and an entire district of a modern city!
In “Embracing Change” a mother tells us how she has come to recognise what a gift her gay son is. June is also the Month of the Sacred Heart, and Sarah Adams in “My Hear will Go On”, shows us how the roots of the devotion reach deeply into the biblical story of the Passion and Resurrection. Fr Gerry Moloney looks back at the anniversary of the assassination of Bobbie Kennedy, “The Lost Hope of 1968.” The usual favourite columns are there as well: Fr George Wadding continues his imaginative meditations on the mysteries of the rosary and has reached the “Luminous Mysteries.” Fr McVerry looks at the homeless crisis and asks if the government is in denial and Carmel Wynne argues what when you change, you change others.
