Introducing Reality October 2017
October is by tradition, Mission Month. One of the reasons Reality (originally Redemptorist Record) was founded was to spread news about the first Redemptorist mission in the Philippines. Soon after its foundation, there was another new mission, this time in India. Then there was a vast mission territory in Brazil, and most recent of all in Mozambique. Fr Sean Purcell, a veteran of the Philippines, tells the story of Fr Ulick Cronin, a native of Kerry who died in 1924 at the age of 33 in a remote barrio in the Philippines. Believing the young priest to be a holy man, the villagers refused to allow his body to be returned to the community. Only this year, has he been reburied in the Redemptorist cemetery in Dumaguette. Fr Brendan McDonald, a veteran of the Brazil introduces us to Our Lady of Apparecida, the national patron. We also reprint in our popular archives section, the first article on the Brazilin mission by the late Fr James McGrath. Two young Brazilian Redemptorists, Fr Eridian and Brother Jean Carlos, describe the mission of Mozambique where they work alongside their Irish brethren.
October is also the month for St Gerard’s Novena in Redemptorist Churches. This is especially true for St Joseph’s, Dundalk, where it draws huge crowds daily..Fr Michael Cusack, Rector of St Joseph’s, tells us why in this Year of the Family, Gerard, the Saint of Life, is for many people, a friend for life.
